Beck Dyeing Article

Modification process in Beck dyeing shows the way to savings:

Researchers have devised three modification processes that can significantly reduce costs of energy, water, and materials that is used in conventional Beck Dyeing. They are:
  • Bump and run- In the bump-and-run technique, there is reduction in the demand for steam while dyeing process is on.
  • Dye-bath reuse- In it the spent dye bath gets reconstituted as well as recycled. An analysis of the spent dye bath is done to ascertain the quantity of remaining dye. Sometimes extra dye is added for the desired colors. Also auxiliary chemicals in small amounts are added for those that got lost in the dyeing process.
  • Hot pull- Hot pull is mainly a handling procedure. It does away with the final rinse step. This minimizes handling problems associated with spent dye bath. Thus vital water is saved during the final rinse.
The exquisite carpets that are to be found from the living room to the Board room adds certainly to the value and exclusivity. Behind those magnificent colours and hues lies the hard work of the dyers and the dyeing process. In fact Carpet dyeing is an extremely arduous effort that involves a series of steps before the final product shows the glittering colours.

There are four basic methods of Carpet Dyeing namely Jet-beck, the second method is called Kuster dyeing, the third method is Yarn dyeing and the fourth method that is explained in detail here and one of the popular methods is the Atmospheric or Beck dyeing method.

The figure below shows an inside view of the Dye Beck.

Dye Beck

Beck dyeing has evolved as a very good method for dyeing of carpet pieces or rolls. Beck dyeing essentially is the Batch method. A beck dyeing operation to be successful must commence in the dye lab itself. In the laboratory a formula or dye recipe is prepared for each of the colour before the carpet is put into becks. Beck dyeing in simple terms is just placing of the carpet in a big vat consisting of hot dye and in a way to cook it for a few hours. Dyeing this way is able to put the color uniformly through out the carpet. This is also the best method for ruling out the problems associated with sidematch. Beck dye carpets Can be a bit expensive as they involve a comparatively longer time.

Key Features of Beck Dyeing

Liquor Ratio- The ratio of the liquor to goods that is used in becks typically stands out at 15:l or some times even higher.

Dyeing Temperatures- Tempearures upto 100oC can be employed for dyeing with atmospheric Becks.

Time Duration- Just as the dye is natural that does not guarantee that it is also environmentally sustainable. For example pesticide may have been used to grow the crops etc.

Crucial role of pH- pH plays a vital role in the beck dyeing process. pH controls strike rate, absorption rate of dye, dye exhaustion etc.

Advantages of Beck Dyeing
  • The greatest advantage of beck dyeing is the modest pricing, simplicity, and versatility.
  • In Beck dyeing fabrics are subjected to comparatively low lengthwise tension and helps the development of fabric bulk and yarn crimp.
  • The process Beck dyeing is an effective way to totally rule out any risk of sidematch problems a common problem with dyeing of carpets.
  • Beck dyeing is able to maintain a colour consistency.
  • In case of carpets, beck dyeing makes it feel more fuller and softer.
